While Cassia Oil in Vietnam has been widely recognized in the Cinnamic Aldehyde and Benzaldehyde Natural production industry when being consumed globally for decades, Coumarin extracted from Cassia Oil has gained less popularity. However, with its competitive price, stable production, and consistent quality, this source material holds immense potential in the fragrance industry.
From the Middle of April, the vast cassia hills stretching across 200,000 hectares in the two largest Cassia Oil plantations of Vietnam, Yen Bai and Lao Cai, come alive with the first harvest of the year. Hundreds of thousands of tons of cassia branches and leaves are then transported to 36 essential oil extraction plants.
Meanwhile, 200km from central of plantation, near the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi, at Techvina, which consumes one-third of the total Cassia Oil from the aforementioned plants, the continuous fractional distillation of Cassia Oil to produce two crucial substances in the fragrance and flavor industry, natural Cinnamic Aldehyde and Benzaldehyde, is in full swing. Coumarin, accounting for 3 -5% of Cassia oil, is also gained during this process.
After undergoing a thorough crystalizing process and a series of other steps, Coumarin with a purity of 99% is extracted. The resulting product is eye-catching colorless crystals with a sweet and pleasant odor, often compared to the scent of new-mown hay.
Compared to synthetic Coumarin, Coumarin extracted from Cassia Oil is extremely safe and environmentally friendly, in line with the green chemistry trend. Additionally, at a high production volume of 25 metric tons per year, Techvina's coumarin remains cost-competitive with natural coumarin derived from other sources. Notably, Techvina's supply chain for producing Coumarin and other Cassia Oil’s isolates is highly sustainable and transparent, as all steps are strictly managed in Vietnamese territory, from seeding, educating farmers in cultivation and sustainable plantation development to applying advanced technology in production, quality control and shipment monitoring after reaching customers. With the shelf life of 2 years and consistent quality when meeting a range of stringent standards such as HACCP, Halal, and Kosher..., Coumarin EU Natural from Techvina has been approved and used as a fragrance agent by some fragrance giants.
